Add Passive Cooling To The Raspberry Pi 3

Posted on

Hey Thrifty Nation!
The Raspberry Pi 3 was recently announced and here it is! Well minus the heatsink I added.
There has been a lot of debate over weather the raspberry pi 3 needs a heatsink or not but I thought I would show you where you can find a heatsink…for free!

I found a suitable heatsink on an old computer motherboard. Between the heatsink and the processor I used a thermal pad cut down to the size of the raspberry pi 3’s processor so I could test this temporarily without any of the mess with thermal compound.
You can find thermal pads in various electronic devices they used to keep ICs cool and in contact with heatsinks, though they are not nearly as good as thermal compound.
Even with it just resting ontop of the raspberry pi 3, the temp has dropped significantly. Before the raspberry pi reported 40 to 42 degrees celsius at idle and now it rests between 2930 degrees celsius.
